CUMBRIA FLOOD DISASTER (Page 1)
COCKERMOUTH RE-OPENS

17 weeks after the floods devastated the town, we have the good news that the main street and the bridges are now officially open again. Though this is a landmark in getting the communities back to normal, the work is by no means finished. In Cockermouth and other areas of Cumberland, including Keswick and Workington, families are still in temporary accommodation and some will remain so for at least another year as their homes are being decontaminated and dried out.
It is in the next few weeks that we will be receiving requests for furniture and other household items as some of the people start to move back into the less severely damaged homes.
I would like to thank all the Clubs and individuals, for so generously giving us the wherewithal to help the communities in the stricken area. I would also like to thank the various other groups outside of Lions for their contributions.
I would also like to thank the Disaster team, which is headed by PDG George Kissane, for their hard work in organising backup and funds for the Clubs in the area.
District Governor Lion Harry Hawksworth.
